The Delaware Youth Center (also known as the Delaware Community Center) started in the 1930′s as the Delaware Athletic Association. The grandstand and the pavilion, were previously located where Hermann Hall stands today. In the 1940′s the Delaware Athletic Association and the Callicoon Fire Department deeded their land to what became known as the Callicoon Aid Center, which was incorporated in the 1940′s. At that time, the mission was to promote educational and recreational opportunities for people in the area.
In 1947, Dr. Mills and Dr. Rumble, two local physicians, started raising funds for a community pool. A string of tragic drownings in the Delaware River prompted them and the community to create a safe alternative to swimming in the river. Over seventy years later our pool continues to operate for both lessons and recreational swimming.
In 1952, the corporate name changed to Delaware Youth Center. In 1984 we assumed the name Delaware Community Center because we were serving such a diverse age group within the community.
In the early 1960s local philanthropist Grover Hermann generously donated funds to build Hermann Hall, the DYC’s main building. Mr. Hermann, who made his fortune initially in paint, went on to found the company now known as Lockheed Martin. He also donated funds for Callicoon’s hospital and Sullivan County Community College. Grover Hermann Hall was constructed in 1964. Over its nearly six decades it has served as a roller rink, dance hall, and a venue for scores of other activities.
We support and improve the facilities through grants, donations, and fundraisers. No donation is too small, and every dollar counts.
